Dave, or David, he really doesn’t mind which, started his honours degree in Civil Engineering at Nottingham Trent University in 1986. Somewhat disillusioned by crushing concrete cubes, and structural analysis, he nevertheless started a sandwich year of work experience at Nottinghamshire County Council, spending six months in both the bridge team and the highways team. Searching for a topic for his final year thesis, someone suggested he look in to the tram that was being planned for Nottingham. At the time, there was a single feasibility report. However, there were systems being planned across the country, and numerous overseas examples to research, and a spark was lit. It was the time of Thatcher’s Roads for Prosperity, and protests about the Newbury bypass, which aligned with a youthful idealism about the environmental impact and social inequalities in our transport systems. Upon graduating, and fired by a desire to work in transport, he began working for a large international consultancy. At the same time he undertook a part time Masters degree in Transport Engineering and Planning at Salford University.
1996 saw a move to BWB Consulting, then a small company of only 35 people. It was the start of a 16 year journey, helping start and then lead the transport and infrastructure planning division, with responsibility for teams in all the company’s offices. In 2013, having weathered another recession, but ground down by its consequences, it was time for a change. ADC Infrastructure was born.
Out of work, David enjoys all sports. He loves a busman’s holiday, combining his passion for transport, architecture, art, and urban design, with a love of travelling, exploring cultures, places, and the human experience. He is happiest at the end of a hot afternoon, as the sun sets, accompanied by a book, a cold beer, and with the family bustling around getting ready for the night out.
