Traffic congestion in Melton Mowbray has long been a political problem that has stalled development and required a long term vision. Since 2012 ADC Infrastructure has been working with Davidsons Developments, to help formulate that vision, designing a southern bypass along with a development of 1,500 houses. In response, Melton Borough Council allocated the Southern Sustainable Neighbourhood as a strategic site in the Local Plan. Sufficient momentum was gained that a Northern Sustainable Neighbourhood was also allocated, and the Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (MMDR) emerged as a wider northern and eastern bypass for the town. Leicestershire County Council successfully obtained £49.5m of Government funding to deliver MMDR and the road application was submitted in late 2018. Work has continued on the southern link road, to be delivered as an addition to MMDR, paid for by developer contributions. In a few years time, Melton will be transformed by this excellent example of all parties puling towards the same vision.
